The welding procedure
Contestants received the pre-tacked joint and booth designation when the time clock began. Electrodes were ready on each table as well as the chipping hammer and brush. Upon final completion, including cleaning of specimen, the contestant alerted the judge who stopped the clock. If contestant used all of the time allocated, the machine automatically turned off after 5 minutes. The contestant then stepped out of the booth.
The judges
A team of AWS Certified Welding Inspectors judged the competition using the criteria for size and appearance of the weld as stated in AWS D1.1/D1.1M, Structural Welding Code—Steel. The judges' results were verified using automated inspection equipment. Speed was also taken into consideration upon final judging.
Results were announced at the Awards Ceremony at 11:00 am after final judging on Wednesday, November 18.
